I found this fern growing in a nice shaded corner of my father-in-law’s garden. Under a water oak and tucked alongside a small pond, this fern seemed to glow in the light of the setting sun. Several photographs and sketches later, our fern frond design was born.

To create these coasters we converted the original illustration into printing plates. Next, we hand mixed a vegetative green ink. Finally, we printed each coasters one-by-one on our hand-fed, 100 year old, Chandler & Price printing press.

The result is a lovely spot to rest your pink lemonade or mint tea.

This set makes a perfect hostess gift, housewarming present or gift for anyone that loves plants.

Never fear! The ink will not run when they get wet!

Love & Joy Cards

Love & Joy: Letterpress Flat Cards & Coordinating Envelopes (set of 6)

Celebrate the season of love & joy with this set of letterpress flat cards!

We created this sentiment and layout with the help of Annemarie Brown, a talented designer in San Francisco.

To make this set of flat cards, we used our collection of antique printers type. Next we mixed a cheery red ink and trimmed down our paper. Finally, we set up the press, inked up our rollers, registered the design and then printed each card, one-by-one using our hand-fed,100 year old Chandler & Price letterpress. Then we cleaned up the press and started the process again for the back.

The result is a perfect place to share your wishes for love and joy.

Silver Birches: Letterpress Flat Cards & Coordinating Envelopes (set of 6)

Then we cleaned up the press and started the process again for the back.

Our good friend Russell Carnes of Earth Sky Builders asked us for a new logo and business cards that reflected his love of wood and craftsmanship. After a healthy amount of design exploration, we arrived at a logo that incorporates hand tools Russ uses to craft fine wood joinery.

As the logo took shape, we explored different paper options. The idea of trying to print on wood came up and we gave it a try. Russ brought us a bunch of different veneer scraps and we were able to use those to make him some special extras. Veneer doesn’t take an impression like paper. It also has a tendency to curl. Despite the printing challenges, we are very happy with the results. We love the way his logo pairs with the wood background.

I was thrilled to get my hands on this set of antique wood type… Each number has its own character from years of printing. This is my first project using this typeface and I am so excited about the finished product!

Each coaster in this collection is hand fed into our Chandler & Price letterpress and hand typeset using a single number 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.

We chose a black ink on white coasters for a timeless graphic statement. Don’t worry, the ink will not run when it gets wet. These super thick 3.5″ round coasters love to get letterpressed! They also hold up for dozens of uses as long as you don’t spill colored liquid on them.

My wonderful sister lives in San Francisco. When I was visiting her, I got the chance to wander around the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park. While on my walk, I came across a little tree with beautiful red berries. The design for this set of cards is derived from a photograph I took of that tree. So cheerful!
